Course Description: This course offers new students a 6 week introduction to the potter’s wheel. Participants will experience basic methods of centering clay, forming cylinder and pottery bowl forms, trimming and adding handles. Students will also learn how to finish their pots using standard decorating and glazing techniques. This class is for students with no prior pottery wheel experience, all are welcome.

Course fee includes clay, tools, bisque firing and glaze firing. No additional costs. Open studios on Saturday are also included.

CLAY FOR A DAY – Wheel Throwing

Enjoy the wonders of clay on the potters wheel in this three hour, fun time, mud making event. Students will complete two-five vessels and pick glaze colors for their fully functional wares made at the Chicago Ceramic Center. Microwave, oven and dishwasher safe pottery will be available for pick up approximately 2 weeks later.

Independent Study

24/7 Open Studio, Monthly Fee $125

Independent Study allows our more advanced pottery students to work autonomously with access to our classroom equipment and facilities. We require that you have been enrolled in at least one previous class at CCC prior to your enrollment in this program(or by approval by the Director).

Registration for this program is offered on a monthly basis, includes one shelf (3ft W x 3ft D x 20in H – aprox), 25 lbs of clay, free bisque and glaze firing in electric, gas or soda kiln. Additional clay is available for sale at $40 per 25 lbs. All clay must be purchased from CCC.

Class: Mugs, Bowls and Plates.
Simple hand built vessels and surface designs for beginners.

5 Week Session $195

Wednesdays 7-10pm – begins July 26

Instructor: Minnie Kim

Course Description: You will enjoy making several mugs, bowls and plates in this five week course. You will also explore surface decoration methods and materials along with basic slab building techniques. Each class will start with making simple forms out of slabs, which will be followed by various surface applications. All levels are welcome.

Fee includes clay, tools, bisque firing and glaze firing. No additional costs.

Ceramic Infusions – Hand Building Workshop

April 29, 4-7PM $45

Workshop Description: Join us for a one day workshop, “Ceramic Infusions”.  You will learn how to work and build with slabs, coils and have fun playing with clay!

Class: Raku and You

4 Week Session $295
Oct 12th – Nov 2nd Wednesdays 7-10PM

Course Description:  Learn Raku,  the ancient  firing technique brought to the United States in the  mid 20th century.  Aesthetics, glazes, under glazes and more will be covered in this comprehensive four week class. In this class we will merge the Raku aesthetic with your sculptures and or vessels.

Course fee includes clay, tools, bisque firing and glaze firing. No additional costs.

Students previously must have taken a beginning wheel throwing class at CCC or other ceramic center/equivelant.

 

Class: Intermediate Wheel Throwing

4 Week Session $195
Sept 14th – Oct 5th Wednesdays 7-10PM

Course Description: This course offers intermediate pottery students an introduction to lids, handles, goblets, teapots, alternative glazing techniques and more.

Course fee includes clay, tools, bisque firing and glaze firing. No additional costs.

Students previously must have taken multiple beginning wheel throwing classes and show a proficient command of making cylinders, platters, vases & bowls. Check with your current instructor if you are unsure.

Kids Classes

5 Weeks $165

Course Description: This course offers new students a 5 week introduction to hand-building and wheel throwing. Beginners will experience basic methods of centering clay, forming cylinder and bowl forms and trimming. The class also includes learning how to finish their pots using standard decorating and glazing techniques. This class is available for children 14 and older.

Jay Strommen has nearly forty years of experience with working in ceramics and has taught for over twenty years in various clay centers, universities and workshops.
